Description

NZSL Level 1A

New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is the language of the New Zealand Deaf community and is recognised as the country’s second official language. At this beginner’s course, you’ll learn basic NZSL skills necessary for simple sign communication. 

You will be provided all the material you need to immerse yourself in New Zealand Sign.

Level 1A is a great course for beginners of NZSL and will give you an introduction to basic grammar, knowledge about Deaf culture and community.

We have a maximum class size of 12, so please save your place early.

Please note: Courses need a minimum number to go ahead. If we don't receive enough interested people - we will be in touch to arrange a refund or schedule you for the next course.

What Do I Need To Bring?

Course Outline

  • Meeting and greeting
  • Exchange greetings and make introductions
  • Understand simple class instructions
  • Learn about the role of facial expression in NZSL 
  • Learn to get, and give, eye gaze before signing (requirements for visual attention)
  • Learn numbers 1‐10 
  • Learn the fingerspelling alphabet, spell their own name, and ask for repetition
